GMC Sierra EV: worth the wait

GMC Sierra EV: worth the wait

We had to be patient before GMC presented the electric version of its Sierra pickup. Now that it's done, we can confirm one thing; it was worth the wait. Chevrolet's cousin to the Silverado will have similar features, but it will have its own personality.

And some very attractive and interesting skills.

The list would be endless if we covered everything at once. Let's go with five things that are sure to be the talk of the town when the model hits the market.

The architecture

The GMC Sierra EV will be based on the General Motors (GM) Ultium platform. This platform has many strengths, including the ability to offer an 800-volt approach. For charging, this is doubly interesting, because with a terminal offering a 350 kW possibility, it will be possible to recover 160 kilometers of autonomy in only 10 minutes. In addition, the positioning of the batteries will lower the center of gravity to the maximum, which will result in a more solid and reassuring behavior on the road.

Charging and other functions

As we have seen, with a 350 kW charging station, we can perform small miracles. But that's not all. Thanks to a directional interface, the GMC Sierra EV will be able to power your home in case of a power outage. The exercise could even last 21 days by limiting itself to essential devices. Then, with the Onboard Power Station Pro system, which offers a 10.2 kW capacity, a homeowner will be able to run their tools on a job site. In fact, 10 outlets will be accessible.

Design

It will be impossible to confuse an electric version with a gasoline variant. This was one of GMC's wishes. At the front, the GMC signature will be recognizable, but where we are used to finding the headlights, we will discover the daytime running lights. The headlights, on the other hand, have been moved down to provide better visibility and also reduce blinding for other drivers.

And what about the front trunk? When you open the hood, the space where the grill is normally located also lifts, giving easy access to the front storage area. Really, there's no mistaking the identity of the Sierra EV.

Power

Certainly, the most interesting data is about power. Using the Max Power mode, one of the five available, you'll be able to unleash 754 horsepower and 785 pound-feet of torque for a 0-97 km/h time of 4.5 seconds. In other modes, you can customize the vehicle's settings, as well as enjoy towing and off-road settings.

Range

Finally, with a Sierra EV, it will be possible to cover at least 644 kilometers, or 400 miles. This was one of the design goals behind the model. So, even towing operations won't be too affected with such mileage freedom. And the drop won't be huge with a load behind. In fact, GMC promises that it will be the same as the difference in fuel economy of a gasoline model when pulling a load.
