Chevrolet Blazer: Is Retirement Approaching?

2025-02-17

According to multiple sources, it appears that the Chevrolet Blazer will not be returning for the 2026 model year. However, this decision would only affect the gasoline-powered version, meaning that the electric version would remain in production.

Several factors could explain the departure of the Chevrolet Blazer, starting with General Motors' ongoing efforts to phase out gasoline-powered models.

Another key factor is that the Blazer is assembled in Mexico, which heavily influences the decision. Recently, the U.S. president introduced a new 25% tariff on products manufactured in Canada or Mexico and then sold in the United States. Ironically, the electric version is also assembled in Mexico, but this does not seem to be an issue. In fact, GM intends for its Mexican plant to focus on producing electric vehicles.

A Legendary Name

This is not the first time Chevrolet has used the Blazer name in its history. The name first appeared in 1969 with the K5 Blazer. Later, from 1983 to 2012, Chevrolet produced the S-10 Blazer, which was based on the same platform as the S-10 pickup truck.

Following the nostalgia trend, Chevrolet decided to revive the Blazer name with a new mid-size SUV. However, buyers were initially skeptical since the new model was far removed from the original truck-based version. Fortunately, the Blazer quickly built a strong reputation and is now a well-regarded model. This success is likely why GM decided to use the same name for its new electric vehicle.

General Motors has declined to comment on the matter, meaning that nothing official has been announced yet. However, all indications suggest that the American automaker’s SUV will be phased out by the end of the year. Rumors also hint that several other models will be discontinued in the coming months, including the Cadillac XT5 and Cadillac XT6. This wave of retirements is expected to pave the way for new electric models at General Motors in the coming years.
